Switchboard Upgrades MELBOURNE
Your local experts in Switchboard Upgrades
If your home still has an old ceramic fuse box, or your circuit breakers are tripping regularly, a switchboard upgrade is one of the most important electrical investments you can make. We’re licensed switchboard electricians based in Melbourne’s Western suburbs — and we upgrade residential switchboards right across the city, from Point Cook and Tarneit to Werribee and all of Melbourne.
Fixed upfront pricing. Completed in most cases in a single day.
What is a switchboard upgrade and do you need one?
A switchboard is the central hub that distributes electrical power throughout your home. Older homes — particularly those built before the 1990s — often have ceramic fuse boxes or early circuit breaker panels that don’t meet current Australian electrical standards. A switchboard upgrade replaces this outdated infrastructure with a modern unit fitted with circuit breakers and RCD safety switches.
RCD protection — also called a safety switch — is a legal requirement on all residential switchboards in Victoria. It cuts power within milliseconds if a fault is detected, preventing electrocution and reducing the risk of electrical fire. Many older Melbourne homes are not yet compliant.
What’s included in a Rincon Electrical switchboard upgrade.
Every switchboard upgrade we carry out includes a full assessment of your existing board and home wiring, removal of the old fuse box or panel, and installation of a new modern switchboard with correctly rated circuit breakers for every circuit in your home. RCD safety switch protection is installed on all lighting and power point circuits as required by Victorian electrical standards.
Why Melbourne homeowners choose Rincon Electrical for switchboard upgrades.
We’ve been carrying out residential switchboard upgrades across Melbourne for 35 years — from replacing old ceramic fuse boxes in established Werribee homes to upgrading modern boards in new Point Cook and Tarneit estates that need additional capacity for EV chargers or solar systems.
Every switchboard upgrade we carry out is performed by a licensed electrician, coordinated correctly with the network distributor, and signed off with a Certificate of Electrical Safety. We back every installation with a lifetime warranty on our workmanship. And with over 500 five-star Google reviews from Melbourne homeowners, our track record speaks for itself.

- Lights flicker or dim when appliances turn on.
- Power points feel warm, spark, or smell burnt.
- You're installing a new high-load appliance — EV charger, air conditioning, solar, or additional circuits.
- Your switchboard has no RCD safety switch protection.
- Your home was built or last rewired more than 25 years ago.
- You're buying, selling, or renting out your property and need compliance certainty.

Switchboard Upgrades FAQ
Your Switchboard Upgrades questions answered.
How much does a switchboard upgrade cost in Melbourne?
The cost depends on the size of your home, the age and condition of your existing board, and the number of circuits requiring protection. We provide a fixed upfront quote after a brief assessment — call 03 4250 9530 or request a quote online.
How long does a switchboard upgrade take?
Most residential switchboard upgrades are completed in a single day — typically 4 to 8 hours depending on the size of the property and the complexity of the existing board. Your power will be off for the duration of the work. We confirm the expected timeframe when we provide your quote.
Do I need to be home during the switchboard upgrade?
Yes, someone over 18 should be present at the property during the upgrade. We need access to the meter box and the property, and we’ll need to confirm completion with you before we leave. We’ll work around your schedule and give you a confirmed time window.
Is my old fuse box still safe to use?
Older ceramic fuse boxes don’t provide the same level of protection as modern switchboards with circuit breakers and RCD safety switches. They respond more slowly to faults, carry a higher risk of electrical fire, and do not meet current Victorian electrical standards. If your home still has a fuse box, we strongly recommend having it assessed. Call us for a free inspection.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing an EV charger?
Possibly, it depends on the capacity of your existing switchboard. A Level 2 EV charger requires a dedicated 32A circuit, which your board needs to be able to support. Many older switchboards cannot accommodate this without an upgrade. We always assess your switchboard as part of an EV charger quote. If an upgrade is required, we include it in the scope and price.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade before installing solar panels?
Solar installation typically requires switchboard capacity for the inverter connection and any additional circuits. Some older switchboards need upgrading before solar can be safely installed. Our team assesses your existing board as part of any solar or EV charger quote to confirm whether an upgrade is needed before proceeding.
Is a switchboard upgrade required before selling or renting my home?
There is no blanket legal requirement to upgrade your switchboard before selling or renting — but your switchboard must have RCD safety switch protection on all required circuits to comply with Victorian electrical standards. If your property doesn’t have this, it is non-compliant, and that can become an issue during pre-sale inspections, rental checks, or insurance claims. We offer free switchboard safety assessments for landlords and vendors.
Will the power be off during the switchboard upgrade?
Yes. The power to your home will need to be off for the duration of the switchboard upgrade — typically half a day to a full day.
What documentation do I receive after a switchboard upgrade?
We issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety on completion of every switchboard upgrade — a legal requirement in Victoria confirming the work was carried out by a Registered Electrical Contractor to Australian Wiring Standards (AS/NZS 3000). You should keep this document with your property records, as it may be required when selling, renting, or making an insurance claim.
